We saw the sun yesterday!!! It was great to see it break through the clouds every so often, but regardless, we had another great day.
We started the day on the metro again. Not as successfully this time, but we recovered well. From Circular Quay, we walked up to and then over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In my head, I had imagined it to be this crazy long bridge, but it’s much shorter than the Brooklyn Bridge (comparing bridges you walk across). Pedestrians can only walk on one side – bikes are on the other – and luckily, it’s the Opera House side. The views of the Opera House are lovely. I mean, every view of the Opera House is lovely, so no big surprise there. It only took about 15 minutes to walk over the bridge, so we visited Kirribilli’s little main street on the other side before heading back.
From the bridge, we headed over to the Opera House for our tour. The tour was great, super informative, and we got to go inside the two large performing spaces – the one for music and the one for opera and ballet. The tour gives a good history of the building. It’s amazing this building actually came to fruition as we know it today!
At the end of the tour, we bought tickets to see Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on Friday. I’ve been fortunate enough to see Carmen at the Vienna Opera House (thanks, Ketch!), so figured I should also see a show at the Sydney Opera House. We figured that if we’re checking major opera houses off the list, the Met and the Paris Opera House are next.
After the tour and lunch at the Opera Bar, we grabbed a ferry to head across the harbour to the Taronga Zoo. Even though we live near the National Zoo, we felt we had to visit the Taronga Zoo, because it would have some funky Australian animals that your average non-Australian zoo may not. During our visit, we got to pet a wallaby (looks like a kangaroo), see several koalas, and see lots of deadly snakes that live in this lovely country.
Caught the ferry back to Circular Quay, the metro back to Kings Cross, dinner, and then it was an early night. It’s an early morning today as we’re off on a day tour to the Blue Mountains.
