Russ, the Otago Peninsula & Larnach Castle

Our weekend began in a great way with the arrival of our first visitor from home - Russ!  Russ and I lived across the hall from each other during our freshman year at Cornell and have been friends ever since.  Russ is a high school math and physics (ugh) teacher in New Jersey and took time off from summer to come and visit his pals in winter.  After 28+ hours of travel, he arrived in Dunedin and let us immediately take him exploring.
After lunch with Vanessa and her friend (and now ours) Kate, we took Russ across the bay to the Otago Peninsula, a place Todd and I hadn't been yet.  It was a beautiful day, and we spent a couple of hours exploring the peninsula.  We took the low coastal road into Portobello, a cute little town where my co-worker Kitty lives, and then headed up into the hills to Larnach Castle.  Larnach Castle is New Zealand's only castle (how lucky are we to live right next to it??!!!), built by William Larnach for his wife...his first of three.  He eventually killed himself...in Parliament.  Lots of drama with this family. While we didn't take the tour of the castle, we did take the time to explore the grounds and the amazing gardens.

From the high road...these cows have the best view...happy cows come from the Otago Peninsula
After a dinner of fish and chips, we let Russ go to bed to get lots of sleep in anticipation of our weekend roadtrip!  To see the rest of our peninsula and Larnach Castle pictures, click here.
