The Moeraki Boulders

Just up the road from Dunedin are the incredible Moeraki Boulders.  They are almost perfectly spherical boulders that lie along a stretch of Koekohe Beach.  Looking like marbles sitting in the sand, when they crack open, they are totally hollow in the middle.  Maori legend describes the boulders as eel baskets, calabashes, and kumra (sweet potatoes) which washed ashore from a large sailing canoe.







And, as a side note, it's lambing time in NZ, so we see cute scenes like this all the time...
