A Sunny Day in Milford Sound

The Lonely Planet South Island cover location - Milford Sound
Easter Monday found us on the road nice and early in order to make the two hour drive from Te Anau to Milford in time to make a 10:30am nature cruise around the sound.  Another thing we heard over and over was how beautiful this stretch of highway was.  Our plan was to drive straight through to Milford and do sightseeing along the road on our way back.  That was easier said than done.

I can't believe the vibrancy of nature's colors that appear everywhere here.  I couldn't stop taking pictures on the window at the blues and greens and vistas that spread out before us.  Here are just a few of the beautiful views we saw.
How incredible are these colors!!

We were a bit surprised when we got to Milford itself.  We were expecting a town at least as big as Te Anau, but it was literally the size of about 5 football fields.  No kidding.  It's the one cafe, the one hotel, the one airstrip for the scenic flights, and the one dock where all the boats leave from.  We can't figure out where all the people who work in Milford eat and live, because we didn't' see a house or a grocery store in Milford or on the way there.

After posing in front of Mitre Peak which is featured on the cover on Lonely Planet's Guide to the South Island (see picture at the top), we headed over to our boat and went out on our cruise.  We were fortunate to have a beautifully sunny day, but it was still superbly cold on the boat, and when it went into the shade...eek!

Following our cruise, we meandered back down the road to Te Anau, taking in all sites we drove past on the way up.

Mirror Lake...cool sign, huh?

And on our way home from Te Anau, we saw a rainbow over Gore.
